The American Muslim population has grown significantly in recent years, and so has the level of Muslim political engagement. Ninety American Muslims are campaigning for various offices in the 2018 election, including two candidates here in Georgia.

Whether as elected officials, voters, activists, lobbyists or even as political punching bags, American Muslims play an increasingly prominent role in the electoral process.

As a result of these and other current events, journalists often find themselves reporting on issues related to the Muslim community. Given widespread confusion and debate about American Muslims and their faith, many journalists are making greater efforts to ensure that their coverage of the Muslim community is ethical, fair and accurate.

To that end, please join top Georgia journalists and Muslim leaders on Oct. 25 at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution for an interactive panel discussion, “Midterms and the American Muslim Voter.” Speakers include AJC editor Kevin Riley, Georgia Public Broadcasting’s Bill Nigut, Georgia House District 97 candidate Aisha Yaqoob, CAIR Georgia executive director Edward Ahmed Mitchell and Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta executive director Soumaya Khalifa.
