If you’re interested in freelancing, wanting to get started or already there and looking to get better established, SPJ Georgia is here to help. Join us Saturday, Aug. 18 at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution headquarters to speak with hiring editors from across Metro Atlanta.
Publications on hand will include Creative Loafing, Reporter Newspapers, Georgia Health News, the AJC’s Living Intown and Living Northside magazines, the Atlanta Voice, Jezebel and Scalawag, among others. You’ll also have the chance to speak one-on-one with full-time freelance journalists who can share what it’s like as an independent writer. Closer to the event, a complete list of publications and editors will be sent to registered attendees so you can plan questions and pitches.
We will also have learning sessions during the job fair, free for attendees:
* Get all the info you need at a business planning session led by Keith Herndon, director of the University of Georgia’s James M. Cox Jr. Institute for Journalism Innovation, Management and Leadership.
* Did you know freelancers have to file their taxes four times a year? Are you writing off enough expenses? Accountant Andrew Jordan will teach about the world of self-employment.
* Networking is important when you’re freelancing. Up your social media game with career consultant Al Smith.
The cost is just $20 per person and lunch is included. Oh, and you’ll have a chance to score free gift cards to Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks. We’ll see you on Aug. 18!
