President Katja Ridderbusch

Katja Ridderbusch is an award-winning, independent multimedia journalist based in Atlanta. A media veteran of three decades, she reports for news organizations in the U.S. and Europe – mostly about police, public safety, health care and social issues.
Katja’s work has been published by KFF Health News, NPR, TIME, U.S. News & World Report, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Police1, German public radio and The Times of Israel.
Originally from Germany, Katja immigrated to the United States in 2005 and proudly became an American citizen in 2010. Before moving to the U.S., Katja worked for the Berlin-based German daily WELT as a staff writer and copy editor; a military and crisis reporter traveling the Balkans, the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan, and a foreign correspondent in Brussels, where she covered NATO and the European Union.
Katja is an Arthur F. Burns Fellow and a recipient of the 2018 Holbrooke Research Grant from the International Center for Journalists. Her work has been recognized with an Association of Health Care Journalists reporting award, a Native American Journalists Association award, and a Green Eyeshade Award.
As president of SPJ Georgia, Katja is committed to expand and nurture partnerships with other journalist organizations in the state, especially those with global connections; boost media literacy in a time where disinformation, misinformation, and distrust in the press have become widespread; and provide student journalists, early-career journalists and journalism veterans with education and skills-based training to stay safe in the digital world and in the field.

Vice President Genelle Williams
Genelle Williams is a writing and editing professional living in Savannah. She currently works as a communication specialist for Sun City Hilton Head Community Association where she oversees the community’s magazine production schedule, assigning features and editing all department publications.
She previously worked as a government beat reporter for the Jasper County Sun Times newspaper. While studying journalism and mass communications as an undergraduate at the University of South Carolina, she interned at the Anderson Independent Mail. Other work includes serving as a page in the South Carolina Senate and contributing writing for The Simpsonville Sentinel and Page Magazine.
In her free time, you can catch Genelle blogging about fashion and beauty, trying new recipes or spending time with her cat, Serena.
Treasurer Susanna Capelouto
Susanna Capelouto is the Southern Bureau Chief for National Public Radio. She works with reporters in 13 Southern states to produce content for NPR’s digital and radio audiences. Before joining NPR Susanna served as Deputy Managing Editor at Atlanta’s Public Radio station WABE.
Throughout her long career as a journalist, she worked as a writer for CNN Digital and as a news editor at CNN’s International desk.
Susanna got her start in journalism at Georgia Public Broadcasting, the state’s 17-station public radio network where she worked as a producer, reporter and eventually as news director. There she reported on state politics, healthcare, and education policies.
Susanna is a graduate of Georgia State University. In her free time, she works with bees as a Georgia Certified Beekeeper, a passion she says can also be applied to news leadership. In 2024 she co-wrote an article about “7 things newsroom managers can learn from beekeeping. ”


Secretary Rachel Spooner
Rachel Spooner is a junior Communications student at Oglethorpe University, minoring in writing. She’s the co-editor of the college’s student-run newspaper, The Stormy Petrel, and she’s set to take on the role of editor-in-chief next semester.
A storyteller at heart, she has a deep interest in people and their stories. Through in-depth interviews and narrative articles, she’s shared those stories with those who need to hear them.
With experience in marketing and content-creation, as well as extensive writing skills, she is well-equipped to spread the word. She is a Dean’s List student who’s always seeking opportunities to grow, collaborate, and learn in creative and supportive spaces.
At-Large Member Mitch Leff
Mitch Leff is president of Leff & Associates. He’s a 35-year Atlanta public relations veteran, recognized as one of the strongest and most effective media relations specialists in Atlanta. His expertise spans non-profits, business to business, consumer products, sports marketing, special event marketing, education, healthcare, technology and telecom.
He began his career with Cohn & Wolfe Public Relations, rising to become media relations director for the Atlanta office, at the time the largest public relations agency in the Southeast.
He’s provided public relations services for some of the world’s most prestigious companies, including The Coca-Cola Company, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, AOL Time Warner, the National Football League (when Atlanta hosted its first Super Bowl), UPS and many others.
He left agency PR to become director of public relations for Turner Learning, the educational division of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. There he was responsible for public relations and public affairs for educational programs across many AOL Time Warner networks and entities, including CNN, TNT, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network and the Atlanta Thrashers. He also launched CNNstudentnews.com, the network’s first and only educational Web site.
Leff spent several years with the Atlanta offices of Edelman Public Relations and GCI Group before launching Leff & Associates in 2003.

At-Large Member Sabriya Rice
Sabriya Rice is KFF Health News’ Southern bureau chief. Her team focuses on bolstering health coverage about equity, race and poverty in the South and Texas.
Previously, she wrote about the business of health care for The Dallas Morning News, covered quality and safety issues in U.S. hospitals and health systems for Modern Healthcare, and produced television and digital medical news stories for CNN.
Most recently, she was the Knight Chair in Health and Medical Journalism at the University of Georgia. Sabriya is a member of the Association of Health Care Journalists, where she serves as co-chair of the Right to Know Committee.


At-Large Member Benjamin Grady
Benjamin Grady currently works as a communication specialist for the Association County Commissioners of Georgia. (ACCG). His role includes primary messaging and marketing of legislative information for all digital communications, producing and editing content for internal and external communications, and establishing and maintaining a working relationship with county officials, subsidiaries, and regional partners throughout the state of Georgia.
As an undergraduate student from Oglethorpe University, he previously worked as a digital communications intern for the Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation (AFRF) in Atlanta. Benjamin also enjoys photography in his free time, photographing a variety of subjects in the form of landscape, portrait and street photography. He currently lives in Smyrna.
At-Large Member Mark Woolsey
Mark Woolsey was always fascinated by radio. After starting out as a DJ, he got hooked on journalism. That led him into a gypsy career, working as a radio anchor/reporter in Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington DC.
After growing more interested in weather, he took courses and was certified as a meteorologist through the Mississippi State University Broadcast Meteorology Program. That brought him to Atlanta and The Weather Channel.
Along the way, he also developed his skills as a print freelancer, writing for many newspapers and magazines. And he worked a couple of TV jobs. He’s semi-retired now but still doing part-time radio. He’s been very blessed to find something he likes to do and to get paid for it.
Journalism is important, he says, because it helps people make better decisions about their lives.


Immediate Past President Laura J. Downey
Laura J. Downey is the executive editor of WebMD’s magazine and its point-of-care products. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and a master’s in journalism at Florida A&M University, Laura Janelle Downey landed in NYC as a reporter for PEOPLE. Since then, she’s been a fashion/entertainment editor, a magazine journalism professor, managing editor of 944 Las Vegas and Vegas/Rated magazines, as well as Atlanta Best Media’s eight publications, and ForbesTravelGuide.com. She served as senior executive editor for Modern Luxury corporation before spending 18 months as a full-time freelance travel journalist.
Downey was selected as a 2021 Dori Maynard Diversity Leadership Program Fellow for the Society of Professional Journalists. In addition, she is a graduate of the 2022 Maynard 200 Fellowship’s Executive Leadership track. The Robert C. Maynard Institute for Journalism Education is a nonprofit dedicated to expanding diversity in the news media and dismantling structural racism in newsrooms. In February 2022, she was featured as a Florida State University Black Alumni Black History Month Spotlight. Downey was also featured in the Spring 2022 and Spring 2024 issues of VIRES Magazine at Florida State University, where she was acknowledged for her career achievements by the Florida State University Alumni Association. In 2024, she was presented with an Award for Excellence from the Society of Professional Journalists student chapter at Florida A&M University.
No stranger to giving back, she has shared her career journey with first-generation students at Florida State University, during an Alumni Lunch Hour at the FSU College of Communication and Information, and as a keynote speaker at Florida A&M University’s School of Journalism & Graphic Communication’s Grads Are Back program. In March 2023, she was featured in The Drum’s Newsletter as FSU Black Alumni’s Women’s History Month Spotlight, and in February 2025, FAMU’s School of Journalism & Graphic Communication named her a trailblazer for breaking barriers and helping to shape the future of media. The dynamic editor also has a Master of Arts in Ministry from Richmont Graduate University. In her spare time, you can find her on the basketball court shooting jumpers in a weekly men’s league. She is a world traveler, sorority girl, volunteer enthusiast, fitness buff, and a former national brand model for Weight Watchers.
Downey is the immediate past president of the Georgia Professional Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. She’s also recognized for being the first Black president since the official founding of the chapter in 2014.
